What does Lehua mean?
The Hawaiian ʻōhiʻa lehua tree is a pioneer species — the first living thing to take root on bare, fresh lava rock. Its seeds spread across the lava and its growth cracks the rock open, beginning the ecosystem that eventually becomes a forest. The ʻōhiʻa lehua is our inspiration that even from great destruction wrought by lava flow, new life can begin, an ecosystem can grow, all things can work together for good.
We shape our client engagements this way as well: we start with one strong value-add for a business and grow from there alongside our partners.
A Hawaiian legend
In Hawaiian moʻolelo (legend, story), ʻŌhiʻa and Lehua were two young lovers. Pele, the volcano goddess, had a strong romantic interest in ʻŌhiʻa, but he was already in love with Lehua. In an act of wild jealousy, Pele transformed him into a gnarled tree. Pele refused to undo what she had done, and so Lehua asked her ʻaumakua (deified family ancestors) to intervene. They decided to transform her into the brightly colored blossom that adorns the ʻōhiʻa tree so they could forever be together. To this day, it is said that if you pick the tree's flower it will begin to rain because the two lovers are being separated.
